〈소현성록〉의 초점화 양상을 통해 본 서사적 밀도 연구 -‘석씨 부인’ 혼인 서사를 중심으로-

본 연구는 조선 후기 국문장편소설인 〈소현성록〉에서 석씨 부인을 중심으로 전개되는 혼인 서사를 대상으로, 초점화 이론을 적용하여 서사적 밀도가 어떻게 형성되는지 고찰하였다. 작품 속 석씨 부인은 유교적 질서가 지배적이었던 당시 사회에서 단순히 수동적 존재가 아니라 자신의 의지와 감정을 주체적으로 드러내는 인물로 형상화된다. 본고는 석씨 부인의 혼인 과정을 크게 세 단계(중매 과정, 양부인·소현성의 혼인 거부, 혼인 완성)로 나누고, 각 단계에서 내적 초점화와 외적 초점화가 교차적으로 작용함을 분석하였다. 내적 초점화는 인물의 내면과 심리적 갈등을 촘촘하게 드러내고, 외적 초점화는 가문‧제도‧사회 규범 등 혼인이 지닌 복합적인 맥락을 객관적으로 조망한다. 이러한 다층적 초점화 전략은 개인적 감정과 사회적 규범이 교차하는 혼인 서사를 긴장감 있고 입체적으로 제시하며, 그 결과 조선 후기 여성의 실존적 조건이 생생하게 드러나는 동시에 작품의 서사적 밀도가 높아지도록 돕는다. 이를 통해 〈소현성록〉은 단순한 가족 서사나 유교 이념의 재현을 넘어 여성 주체성과 사회 구조가 복합적으로 얽힌 혼인을 문학적으로 형상화하는 성취를 보였음을 확인할 수 있다. 나아가 본 연구는 조선 후기 국문장편소설에서 초점화 기법이 서사적 밀도를 심화하는 핵심 장치임을 제안함으로써, 향후 여성 서사와 혼인 제도에 대한 후속 연구의 방법론적 지평을 확장하는 데 기여하고자 한다.
Abstract
This study explores how narrative density is constructed in the marriage narrative of Sohyeonseongrok, a late Joseon dynasty Korean novel, through the lens of focalization theory. Focusing on Lady Seok, this analysis challenges the perception of her as a passive figure constrained by Confucian norms, instead highlighting her as an active agent who asserts her will and emotions. The study divides her marriage process into three stages—the matchmaking phase, Madam Yang and Sohyeonseong’s rejection, and the final consummation of the marriage—and examines the interplay of internal and external focalization at each stage. Internal focalization intricately reveals the characters’ psychological struggles, while external focalization provides an objective perspective on the familial, institutional, and societal contexts shaping the marriage. Through this layered focalization strategy, the narrative—where personal emotions and social conventions intersect—gains both tension and dimensionality, effectively illustrating the existential conditions of women in the late Joseon era and enhancing the work’s narrative density. This approach demonstrates that Sohyeonseongrok, beyond merely portraying a family chronicle or Confucian ideals, achieves a sophisticated literary depiction of marriage in which female subjectivity and social structures intricately coexist. Moreover, by identifying focalization as a key mechanism for intensifying narrative density in late Joseon dynasty Korean novels, this study broadens the methodological scope for future research on women’s narratives and marriage customs in early modern Korean literature.
