Abstract
Journal of the T. S. Eliot Society of Korea 33.1 (2023): -64. Abstract: It has been commonly accepted that although Eliot’s Four Quartets is very abstractive and incomprehensible, “East Coker” is relatively more easily accessible than “Burnt Norton.” This is in part due to the fact that instead of meditating on the metaphysical meaning of time, Eliot realistically depicts the finiteness of all things in “East Coker.” By embracing inevitatably the universality of finiteness and the existential limitedness of time, human beings come to seek for a genuine way of life as a limited being. More specifically, in “East Coker” Eliot underlines that keenly aware of the limitedness of their existence, wo/men should keep in their mind the significance of humility, conscious waiting, endless spiritual search for redemption, prioritizing love over knowledge.
