Abstract
The masculinisation of women‘s fashion can be a characteristic of modern fashion. The other side, the feminization of men’s fashion was a phenomenon that was seen in the past also. For example, in the case of skirt, it was worn as menswear a lot longer than trousers. The ancient Egyptians wore lap skirt called pagne, the Romans and the Greeks were dressed in tunic of robe form. This long tunic is shown in Babylon as well as in Byzantine and feudal age. Men began to have for the first time their own vestment, trousers, after 16th century, thus during almost 4500 years, from ancient Egypt 3000 B.C. to medieval times, men were robed in skirt like women. Therefore the skirt maintains constantly its shape in women's fashion as well as men's fashion, but it doesn't always symbolize femininity. The purpose of this study is to analyze the connection between skirt and feminine characteristic through researching the symbol of skirt in past men's mode. The sphere of research contains ancient, folklore, Asian, garon dress in East and West. Key words ; East/West(동서양), feminin(여성), masculin(남성), skirt(치마), symbol(상징)
