침선장 정정완의 갖은 수의에 대한 고찰 -남․녀 속옷을 중심으로-

Abstract

People in the 21st Century tend to think tradition is outdated and not comfortable. However, the funeral culture which was traditionally recognized to be important along with the filial piety keeps its tradition although it was slightly changed. The first CHIMSONJANG(a holder of the Important Intangible Cultural Heritage No.89) Jeong Jeongwan, the main descendant of nobility culture in the late Joseon Dynasty Period, said that the shroud was 'clothing for long excursion'. This saying is on the same line with the Korean traditional value about the next life having the continuance of this world and funeral means the beginning of the new world. This study will validate the spirit and costume of the Jeong Jeongwan, especially I made the underwear among ‘Complete Shroud’ and assessed whether it can be applied to modern shroud. This study verified that Jeong’s works are deeply conveyed with profound respect toward humanity, and such deep respect toward humanity would influence and console the spirit of dead. This will again provide important impetus in adopting the traditional shroud in modern era.
