Abstract

The study applies the aesthetic motif of baroque costumes in the 17th century to contemporary coats. The aesthetic characteristics of the baroque costumes are as follows: As for ornamental beauty, regardless of consideration of balance, it enumerated a series of ornaments for the sake of ornamentation without pursuing sophisticated aesthetic elements or value, but it showed pompousness of curves, affluence and high techniques in terms of sensitivity to realize magnificent and splendid dressings. In addition, ornamentation was adopted to symbolize authority and dignity, and extended color or sleeves expressed sublime beauty, becoming important elements of costumes at that time. Sensuality expressed through neckline, swollen hip or fit upper body in line with the aesthetic beauty of that time played an important role in expressing the unique beauty of the time.The features of the baroque costumes in the contemporary costumes are as follows:They frequently show hour-glass silhouette and fit and flare silhouette, and new materials such as leather, fur and polyester as well as wool are used a lot. Pompous detail ornaments that were used in shoulders, sleeves, waist and hem of skirts in the baroque costumes are toned down to be used in the contemporary costumes. Based on these theories, three pieces of work were created and the conclusion of the study is as follows:The components as silhouette, materials and ornaments were recreated to befit the current age through harmonization with the contemporary fashion to express the restoration image of a new style. In consideration of functionality in the contemporary lifestyle, it made it possible to attach and detach parts of the dressing.It is expected that when designers or students apply the results of this study to patterns and designs of coats, or manufacture other coats, specific figures would be practically helpful.
