Abstract

More than any other pojagi, supo has been handed down from generation to generation among Koreans. The primary reason seems to be the presence of folk belief in supo, especially in the variety of patterns used in the embroidery. These patterns symbolize the pursuit of blessing, happiness and good luck. Sine supo were made and preserved in supplication of good things, naturally there existed on outstanding difference between this particular pojagi and the ordinary pojagi, A brief description of the individual characteristics, period of production, purpose, material, patterns, colors and other aspects of the embroidered pojagi will help to introduce the supo. The era of the embroidered pojagi seems to be sometime toward the close of the Chosun Dynasty, judging from the materials, patterns and embnoidery method. This assumption is based on the use of machine-woven cotton fabric materials used as the background of the embroidery. Cotton fabrics were made in large quantities in those days and wear also imported from neighboring countries.Secondly, the patterns lacked the regulation and order which characterized the period that preceeded the latter half of the Chosun Dynasty. They were more fluid, contrasting with the past variety which sought esthetic and artistic perfection.Finally, the embroidery in supo was randomly done. While the embroidery of the past was done in a close and fine form, the late Chosun Dynasty embroidery was thick and rough. Supo also used golden thread in the formation of lines.
