Abstract
This study analyzed and tested the serial multiple mediation effects of organization-based self-esteem and work meaning in the relationship between job demand and emotional exhaustion. Data collection was conducted by distributing an online questionnaire to 330 employees, and the final 307 data were used for analysis. The results of the analysis were as follows. First, job demand had a significant effect on emotional exhaustion; second, the respective mediating effects of organization-based self-esteem and work meaning were not statistically significant in the relationship between job demand and emotional exhaustion. Finally, the sequential mediating effect of job demand and emotional exhaustion was significant. Based on the results, this study confirmed the effectiveness of organization-based self-esteem and meaningful work in mitigating emotional exhaustion in the context of employee work overload. This study provides theoretical and practical implications in that it examined the effect of meaningful work as an antecedent of organization-based self-esteem.
