Abstract
Hyon Sook Choe. 2003. Reconstruction and Binding in the Minimalist Program: with Special Reference to Conditions A and C. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 28-3, 511-545. Condition A and Condition C differ in the following way: Condition A is a positive coreference rule, exhibiting locality, while Condition C is a negative noncoreference rule, without exhibiting locality. They also differ in their reconstruction effects. Different reconstruction effects Conditions A and C exhibit suggest that they also differ in the way they apply although they do not explicitly say in what way they apply. In this paper, by examining reconstruction effects of Conditions A and C, I discuss how three previous approaches to binding (a representational approach, a derivational approach and a movement approach) can deal with them. After discussing the way they apply, I attempt to explain why they differ in a particular way and show that reconstruction effects in relation to Conditions A and C may not be described by a representational approach, but they may by a derivational approach which I call a cyclic derivational approach. Although a cyclic derivational approach may properly describe some reconstruction effects of Conditions A and C, it cannot explain them. I thus discuss, under the minimalist program, that they can be explained by a movement approach, although the nature of a movement approach has yet to be clarified. (Yeungnam University)
