Abstract
Kim, Soo-Yeon, 2007, Opacity in the Interpretation of Anaphors. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 32-4, 557-579. This paper presents the observation that there is a multi-faceted intervener in anaphoric dependency. It forms an opaque domain which an anaphor cannot see through when it seeks its antecedent. The proposal starts from questioning empirical viability of feature mismatch approaches to so-called Blocking Effects. After clarifying a concept of opacity as the one which is sensitive to discourse saliency or animacy of an intervener, the proposal treats Blocking Effects in anaphoric dependency as a mere result of general opacity domain effects which are not necessarily related to syntactic structures or features. The anaphors that this paper examines include: Korean overt anaphors like caki, Korean floating quantifiers with a PRO subject, Chinese ziji, and ta-ziji, Icelandic sig, Norwegian seg selv, Romanian sine and English himself.
