Assessment of Agricultural Literacy Level of Elementary School Students in Daegu and Gyoung-buk Area

The purpose of the study was to assess the knowledge of issues related to agriculture, food, and the environment of students in elementary school in Daegu and Gyoung-buk area. The demographic backgrounds of students are also examined to identify characteristics that would be predictive of greater knowledge. Based on the results of the study, conclusions of the study were as follows : 1. The level of agricultural literacy of elementary school students in Daegu and Kyoung-buk province area is not high, nor low; 2. The agricultural literacy level of elementary school students has been lowered; 3. Students, who have experienced on growing plants, have higher agricultural literacy level than the others; 4. Students, who have positive attitude toward agriculture, have much higher agricultural literacy level than others. Recommendations of the study were as follows : 1. Since the level of agricultural literacy level has been lowered, more aggressive approach for developing curriculum for agricultural literacy is needed; 2. It would be recommended that the Ministry of Educational Science and Technology should force to develop new agricultural literacy courses for pre-service and in-service teacher education system; 3. For further research from this study, it is necessary to conduct a research on developing agricultural literacy program for elementary school student; 4. It is also needed to conduct a research on developing and applying agricultural literacy program for national university of education system.
