Abstract
Lee, Sungbom. 2004. Specification of Underdetermined Informational Contents in Verbal Communication. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 29-3, 377-417. The process of semantic and pragmatic interpretations of an underdetermined utterance in verbal communication is explored. Since the process crucially hinges on the distinction between 'what is said' and 'what is implicated' in Gricean pragmatics on the one hand and the distinction between 'explicature' and 'implicature' in Relevance theory on the other, we critically review some of their important claims on semantic and pragmatic interpretation of underdetermined utterances. We then propose a non-sequential, parallel processing model of semantic and pragmatic interpretations of an utterance. The model includes what we call 'pre-conditions of utterance interpretation', two processing modules that operate independently of each other but interact closely to retrieve a full semantic and pragmatic content of underdetermined utterances, and a mediating collative module. We show how they function with various semantic and pragmatic phenomena and discuss the theoretical ramifications on neurolinguistic theories on language processing. (Sogang University)
