Abstract
Kim, Young-Seok. 2006. English Stress: Rules or Constraints? Korean Journal of Linguistics, 31-1, 1-26. In this paper we review Halle's (1998) analysis of English stress in comparison with the constraint-based analysis of Burzio (1994 et seq.). It is argued that the latter is superior not only in simplicity but in coverage of the data. In Burzio (1994) stress is "checked" by three sets of constraints: Metrical Well-formedness, Metrical Consistency, and Metrical Alignment. Besides proposing Generalized Shortening that combines several cases of vowel shortening, this theory effectively dispenses with cumbersome destressing rules as well. In Halle (1998), on the other hand, the metrical grid is built by cyclic and/or noncyclic rules. Although his rule system is far less complicated than that of Halle and Vergnaud (1987), it nonetheless proves sharply inadequate with regard to stress preservation effects. Other theoretical problems are also noted. (Sogang University)
