Abstract
Niinuma, Fumikazu and Park, Myung-Kwan. 2006. Agree after Move. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 31-4, 567-584. This paper investigates into the relation between Agree and Move. The last decade has seen a shift in the view on this relation. In the early Minimalist Program represented by Chomsky (1995), the operation Move applies to meet a feature-related EPP requirement, and the other operation Agree then comes into play in the Spec-head configuration. In the more recent Minimalist Program represented by Chomsky (2000, 2000a, b), Agree applies in the head-head configuration before Move occurs, and Move then proceeds to satisfy a not feature-related, but configurational EPP requirement. This paper argues for an eclectic approach to Chomsky's two different lines of analysis for Agree and Move. In particular, on the basis of agreement and movement phenomena in coordinate structure we argue that Move proceeds without invoking Agree as part of its sub-components, and Agree applies in the Spec-head relation after Move is done. That clause-triggered agreement in English, word order-dependent agreement in Standard Arabic, and peculiar agreement patterns in Icelandic dative subject constructions render additional evidence confirming that the proposed approach is on the right track toward understanding the relation between Agree and Move.
