Abstract
Chung, Taegoo. 2007. On English Adjectival Passives: Toward the Syntactic Approach. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 32-2, 213-239. This paper investigates the adjectival passive formation (APF) in English. The issue is whether APF is lexical or syntactic. This study first examines the lexical approaches (Wasow 1977, Levin & Rappaport 1986) where adjectival passives are formed in the lexicon, and the syntactic approaches (Embick 2004, Emonds 2000, 2006) where they are formed in the syntax. It presents the data to support the syntactic approach, and suggests that Emonds' (2000, 2006) approach to APF is plausible and tenable. It shows how the syntactic approach can account for the properties of adjectival passives different from verbal passives, as well as their common properties. This study also presents some data problematic with Emonds (2000, 2006) and modifies some of his proposals. (Korea University)
