1950년대 우리나라 아동의 의생활과 교육

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to take a look at the clothing & textiles and its education for children in Korea in the 1950’s, and to construct the fundamental reference for other studies in the future. Literatures and references from the internet were reviewed. The major findings in this study were as follows: 1) The clothing & textiles of Korean children in the 1950’s were westernized faster than adults' in Korea as supplies from U.S Army were the main source of their clothing & textiles. As the society stablized, the interest in the children’s clothing grew, and they start to wear different clothing for different occasions. Also, in the earlier phase of the 1950’s, the only clothing & textiles education in the elementary school were girls in the fifth and sixth grades being taught ‘housekeeping‘. After 1955, the clothing & textiles unit in the practical arts education in grades four to six, while in the sixth grade, only girls were taught as well. This derives from the old thought that the ability to sew is a virtue for women. The contents of the curriculum were greater in volume and complexity that it is now, as the focus of the education was to allow the students to support themselves, as not many students went to school after sixth grade. Although the lifestyles in Korean people in the 1950’s were appalling due to the Korean War, the support from foreign countries and the will to rebuild has brought a surprising change and growth in the children’s clothing & textiles. It can be concluded that education in the elementary practical arts education fulfilled the role of educating young girls in the 1950’s to help adapt to the sudden change of the era and also cultivate the ability to support themselves in the future.
