지금까지 <혜성가> 연구는 주술성을 지나치게 강조한 경향이 있다. 이에 대한 반성으로 작품의 역사적 현실성을 드러냄으로써 작품에 대한 균형잡힌 이해가 요구된다. 신라시대 성괴(星怪)를 제재로 한 기록들을 비교해 보면, 「융천사 혜성가 진평왕대」는 주술적인 면보다 현실적인 면이 두드러진 자료로 파악된다. 여기서 비교된 자료들에 나타난 천문 인식과 태도는 작품의 합리적 이해에 많은 도움을 준다. 594년(진평왕 16년)을 창작 연대로 본 견해를 수용하고 보면, <혜성가>는 진평왕 초기의 역사적 사건과 시대 분위기를 반영한 작품임을 알 수 있다. 진평왕이 추진한 정치․행정․군사적 제도 개혁과 축성 사업 등이 배경이 되어 있는 것이다. 또한, 『화랑세기』의 화랑도 조직을 참조하면, 제5․제6․제7로 서열화한 세 화랑은 우삼부(右三部)에 속한 묘화랑(妙花郞)들일 것으로 짐작된다. 이들의 금강산행은 전래의 화랑도 활동에 불교 신앙을 접목시켜 진평왕대 국가적 사업의 성공을 기원하는 정치적 시위일 가능성이 있다. 작품 속 시적 화자의 주관적 판단이 주술성을 띠고 있기는 하다. 그렇지만 다른 한편으로 시대 상황을 바탕으로 한 당대인의 의식을 드러내고 있다. 천체의 변괴를 인간 세상에 대한 경고로 받아들이면서도 인간의 정성과 선한 의지로써 변괴를 불양할 수 있다는 인본주의적인 의식이 나타나 있다. 또한, 작가는 천체에 대한 면밀한 관측을 통해 그 나름의 합리적인 판정을 내렸다. 곧, 해․달․별, 삼광(三光)의 정상적인 운행으로 천체가 굳건한 바에 혜성 따위는 재액을 가져올 수 없다고 단정지은 것이다. 이렇듯 <혜성가>는 주술적인 측면에 비해 역사적 현실성이 두드러진 작품이다. 작품이 창작된 당대의 역사가 배경을 이루고 당대인의 관념과 의식이 나타나 있는 것이다.
Abstract
Until now, the trend of study of the poem in Silla dynasty, Hyeseong-Ga(A comet song), inclined to emphasize the incantatory properties of the work. For the purpose of balanced understanding, we should investigate the historical reality of the work. There are some stories which are concerned with the star's accident. Comparing these stories with the surrounding story of the poem, we found the surrounding story to have more realistic than incantatory properties. Hyeseong-Ga reflects the historical facts and the atmosphere during the period of King Jinpyeong. The reform of the political, administrative, military system and fortification of the periphery of capital is the historic background of the poem. If we refer to the recently discovered history book, Hwarangsegi, the three Hwarangs in the poem would be the Myohwarangs belonging to the Woosambu post. They go to the Geumgang mountain to demonstrate with the hope of successfully undertaking the national reform. The poetic subject declares to eradicate the calamity brought on by the comet. This declaration is based on the incantation on the one hand, but on the other hand on the proper consciousness of that period. The poet had observed the heavenly body in detail, and then declared that notion on the basis of the harmonious celestial movement. With this investigation, Hyeseong-Ga would be interpreted as a realistic work rather than incantatory one.
