초록

This comparative study draws on Hyland’s (2005a) model to examine variations in the use of metadiscourse by experts and by Korean EAP (English for Academic purposes) students at two different levels of their academic careers. After interactive metadiscourse and interactional metadiscourse was extracted in the three corpora made up of introductions of RA (research article) using AntConc (Anthony, 2014), they were analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively. Differences in terms of function and usage pattern regarding the ways in which metadiscourse from different subcategories was used in specific contexts as well as statistically significant difference were identified across the three corpora. These observed differences suggest that the Korean EAP students are in the process of developing use of metadiscourse in complicated ways as construct grounded in academic English rhetoric. This study is expected to reinforce awareness of the developmental profile of metadiscourse use and its sensitivity to context by adding a qualitative investigation.
