Abstract

Korea that had opened the ports by Ganghwado Treaty in 1876 dispatched five times of Sooshinsa(修信使) from1876 to 1885 and one time of Inspectors(朝士視察團) in 1881 to Japan. Up to now, approximately 20 Sahangroks(使行錄) which had been written by Sooshinsa including Inspectors were identified. The characteristics of these records are different by writers, writing time, writing contents, and so on, which reflects the different viewpoints and attitudes on Japan by individuals, referring to each record review. In this article, the differences by individuals were investigated for the attitudes to the Japanese investigational trips and the viewpoints on Japan. To do so, three records by the attendants of Inspectors in 1881 were selected as the textbooks including Ildongrok, Donghangilrok, and Dongkyungilgy by Jin Hyung Kang(姜晉馨), Kun Ho Min(閔建鎬), and Hun Bin Song(송헌빈), respectively. Three people to leave Japanese travel records were dispatched as the same position to Japan, while their viewpoints on Japan were different in the records. Jin Hyung Kang, an attendant with the most traditional way of thinking, was shown that he had hardly accepted the new products of civilization easily not to be adaptive well to the modern times after crossing to Japan. He did not describe the places to visit personally, products of civilization, thoughts on the city scenery, and so on in the travel records, which reflected not to be interested in any objects specially. From the poem that he wrote for a Japanese person only with whom he made relationship, it was known indirectly that he was negative to the products of civilization in Japan and was not well adaptive to the civilized Japanese life. On the other hand, Kun Ho Min left the records on his personal life or thoughts on the observed objects, and he was well adaptive to the Japanese life to make the relationship with a variety of Japanese classes with high level of interests in the cultures and customs in Japan. Hun Bin Song showed the progressive attitude on the modern products of civilization and the technologies transcribing multiple manufacturing methods in the travel records, however, he did not record the common conversations by writing or the poems. Unlike Kun Ho Min, it was estimated that he had made relationship with few Japanese people personally or no interest at all. The attendants of Inspectors showed much more dynamic emotions and attitude to Japan compared to the existing envoys.
