Abstract
Samuel Fuller is the first Hollywood director who made a film about the Korean War. This paper looks at his first two Korea War films, The Steel Helmet and Fixed Bayonets, and discusses the ways in which the spatial structures of the films metaphorically represent the characters’ psychological and physical status and problems. These films were made only a while after the U.S. troops joined in the war and also when McCarthyism’s ‘red-scare’ campaign swooped the entire nation. Although this was a period when the U.S. government encouraged the film industry to produce pro-war films, Fuller focused on realistic and critical portrayal of the war in his films. Nevertheless, unlike other so-called realistic war films of the period, he was not interested in making films with overwhelming war spectacles. Instead his two films are set in rather claustrophobic spaces, which is rare for such a genre. The Steel Helmet depicts a small group of soldiers staying in an empty temple, whereas Fixed Bayonets deals with the story of soldiers facing enemies in a small cave located in a snowy mountain area. This paper argues that Fuller’s unique spatial structures send messages about the internal psychological landscapes of the soldiers as well as their physical state. Through the study of such a metaphoric usage of spatial settings in Fuller’s films, we can develop more comprehensive views in understanding his works.
