이 글은 2차 세계대전 당시 작가 안나 제거스의 망명 경험이 바탕이 된 소설『통과비자』에서 편지의 부유하는 궤적이 소설을 어떻게 작동시키며, 소설 속 인물들의 욕망인 ‘망명’과 조우하는지 살펴보고자 한다. 『통과비자』는 편지의 내용을 직접 보여준다거나 서간문 소설의 형식을 취하는 것은 아니지만, 이 작품에서 편지는 등장인물의 심리와 행동의 변화를 추동하는 중요한 매체다. 소설 속시공간은 망명하기 위해 통과해야만 하는 난민의 이동에 따라 구성되면서 편지의 이동과도 궤적을 같이한다. 주인공에게 잘못 도착한 편지는 권태로운 주인공의 삶에 균열을 내는 중요한 사건임과 동시에 ‘도주(망명)’라는 욕망을 실현시켜줄 수 있는 방법이 된다. 발신자와 수신자가 다른 주체라는 점, 발신자와 수신자 사이에 시공간의 거리가 있다는 점에서 편지는 소설의 위기를 조성하는 반면 인물에게는 구원의 가능성을 지니게 되는 것이다. 편지라는 글이 지니는 특수한성격을 바탕으로, 『통과비자』에서 편지의 부유하는 움직임은 전쟁 후의 시대적 상황 속에서 망명의 시공간을 구성하는 동시에 표상한다고 볼 수 있다.
Abstract
This study aims to examine how the movement of letters in Transit by Anna Seghers encounters exile, the desire of the characters in the novel. Transit does not directly show the contents of the letter or take the form of an epistolary novel, but the letter is an important medium that drives changes in the mind and behavior of the character in this work. The time and space in the novel are constructed in accordance with the movement of refugees who have to pass borders to defect, and at the same time, they are in line with the movement of letters. The wrong arrival of letters is an important event that cracks the boring life and simultaneously is a way to realize the main character’s desire for escape. In that the sender and the receiver are different agents, and that there is a distance between the sender and the receiver, letters creates a crisis of the novel, while being savior for the character. Based on the particular characteristics of the letter, it can be seen that the floating movement of letters in Transit constitutes and represents the space-time of exile in the post-war situation.
