초록

Reflections on marriage are not merely domestic considerations at the turn of the 18th century. The model of the family with its basis in the marriage between man and woman is central to understanding not only gender relations, but political relations as well, in the turbulent early modern period in England. Lockean contact theory and modern liberal democracy have increasingly come under attack from feminist scholars disillusioned by liberal ideals of equality. The early female writer Mary Astell (1668-1731) was perhaps the first to point to the moral hazard of an idea of freedom based on choosing to subject oneself only to a power that suited one’s own interest as property owner. This paper seeks to delineate how the liberal political thought of her almost exact contemporary Daniel Defoe (1661?-1731) compares and contrasts with the tradition-bound political thought of Astell on the topic of women, marriage, and political subjecthood, and surprisingly comes up with similar conclusions through radically different deliberations.
