초록

In this article, I try to analyze why The Great Gatsby, the film (1974), is estimated as a failure compared with The Great Gatsby, the book. I analyze the main reason for its failure as the following: 1) the disappearance of deep contemplation and meditation of the narrator, Nick Carraway, and 2) the failure to represent Daisy as a complex and multi-layered character, among several other reasons. At first, Nick’s meditation and commentary was not described deeply and his role is weakened as a narrator who penetrated the ambiguity of “The American Dream,” though the director, John Clayton, made an effort to be loyal to the book to the extreme. I trace the failure of Nick through three episodes in the film. Secondly, I analyze the representation of Daisy both as a beautiful lover of Gatsby and as a symbol of the ‘American Dream’ represented by a green light. The latter seems to be a failure, though the first is a success to some extent. Consequently, this film seems not to represent both an admiration and a criticism of the ‘American Dream,’ despite a too loyal and detailed representation of American high-class society through dancing feet and pretty knees at the Jazz Age.
