초록

This essay attempts for a comparative analysis of the two distinct title pages of John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress. With a focus on the physical layout of the title pages, I aim to demonstrate how individual visual dimensions of the 1684 first edition of Part Two correspond to and complicate the content of the narrative, which fashions a very specific female ‘protagonist.’ My analysis of the materiality of Part Two of John Bunyan’s The Pilgrim’s Progress instills vitality in the feminist scholarship that surrounds this seventeenth-century text. To that end, my investigation focuses particularly on the ways in which the paratext is constructed. The title-page, frontispiece, and the illustrations found in the text demonstrate altogether how vital these aspects are not only for fully understanding the gendered narrative that is created by Bunyan, but also for emphasizing the importance of such an angle of analysis.
