초록
This essay aims to widen the horizon of studies on nineteenth-century developments of modernist aesthetics. Recent scholarship focuses on imperial peripheries in the mid- and late nineteenth century as fecund historical and geographical sources that gave rise to thematic and stylistic creativity. Provided that modernism designates aesthetic representations of changes and crises in modernity, this essay posits that Olive Schreiner’s The Story of an African Farm—an experimental novel that is set in the 1860s’ South Arica—offers an opportunity to analyze what kinds of aesthetic peculiarity arise in face of modernizing forces of empire in a particular context of imperial peripheries. Previous critics, diverse though they are in their approach to the stylistic originality of this novel, tend to ignore particular cultural and social challenges in the region at the time and in so doing simplify colonial experiences. This essay attempts to prove that appreciating its aesthetic achievements requires a proper understanding of historical contexts of European settlers’ life the novel depicts. It is by situating the novel in its geographical, historical, and cultural contexts that one can productively revise conventional modernist studies which prioritize epistemological experiences in the imperial metropolis and thereby reproduces the traditional historiography of English literature.
