초록

This essay attempts to examine the influence of Inchbald’s female predecessors such as Eliza Haywood and Frances Burney, especially on her first novel, A Simple Story. The two narratives of the novel can be said to embody early women writers in a literary history, criticizing masculine domination in the canon-making business starting from the 1780s. By portraying the struggle of the two generations of women with patriarchal authority, Inchbald shows how masculine historiography displaces the tradition of women’s writing. The essay illustrates how Inchbald situates her heroines, Miss Milner and Matilda, in relation to the spirits of the heroines of Haywood and Burney, and how she aligns herself with her literary mothers. Also, Incorporating the plot of paternal recognition in a gothic story of the daughter, the essay shows how the sadistic father manipulates his daughter’s struggle for identity and demands that she repress her ties with her mother. Similarly, a woman of a later generation is forced to deny her connection to the defiant literary mothers in order to secure a place for her professional career. In this context, Maria Edgeworth’s open admiration of Inchbald illuminates the daughter’s significant role in recognizing and continuing the maternal tradition.
