초록

This article explores the manner in which Katherine Mansfield’s “Miss Brill” wrestles with the anxiety of aging and powerlessness by focusing on the titular character’s imaginary entanglement with her fur necklet. This article theoretically analyzes the poetic relationship between Miss Brill and the fur necklet through the lens of thing theory by referring to the works of Bill Brown, Barbara Johnson, Jane Bennett, W.J.T. Mitchell, and Sara Ahmed. My contention is that the poetic entanglement predicated on the apostrophes that Miss Brill uses to call her fur necklet creates an artistic void in which her sense of agency and liveliness can be prolonged. Theoretically expanding the well-established interpretations of “Miss Brill,” which emphasize the role of the ironic narrator, this article contends that the narrator eventually privileges the power of Miss Brill’s imagination, which introduces a new order of temporality into the narrative.

Abstract

This article explores the manner in which Katherine Mansfield’s “Miss Brill” wrestles with the anxiety of aging and powerlessness by focusing on the titular character’s imaginary entanglement with her fur necklet. This article theoretically analyzes the poetic relationship between Miss Brill and the fur necklet through the lens of thing theory by referring to the works of Bill Brown, Barbara Johnson, Jane Bennett, W.J.T.
