초록

In this article, we examine implicit prosody in parsing among Korean-speaking L2 learners of English, with focus on the parsing of a relative clause (RC) with a complex noun phrase. Using a forced-choice paper-pencil survey from seventy subjects (forty-four females and twenty-six males), we collected data for RC-attachment preference in L1 Korean and L2 English. The results indicated that subjects demonstrated a high attachment preference in L2 English, which was greater than in L1 English but lower than in L1 Korean. The complementizer 'which' (signaling inanimacy) was associated only with greater RC high attachment preference than 'who' (signaling animacy). Other factors such as duration of English studies and presence of restrictive/non-restrictive RCs were not statistically significant. These findings imply that Korean-speaking L2 learners of English have acquired RC-attachment preference to some extent, but not completely. The effect of prosodic breaks cued by commas in L2 English may not have emerged since their high attachment preference is favored too much to be further enhanced by non-restrictive RCs.
