村上春樹作品世界に浸透するジャズ音楽 -「中国行きのスロウボート」と「On A Slow Boat to China」を中心に-

This paper is a review of Haruki Murakami's first short novel 'A Slow Boat to China' focusing on musical perspective. The title of this novel 'A Slow Boat to China' was derived from a jazz music called 'On A Slow Boat to China'. Furthermore, Haruki Murakami mentioned that he took a hint from this music. However, in comparison with the novel, music illustrates the complete opposite aspect. Moreover, there is no existence of a reference to the music. The purpose of this paper is to study the background of the genre of jazz, the background of the music 'On A Slow Boat to China' and it's inner world and the correlation between these two. Finally, this paper aimed to find the meaning of jazz to Haruki Murakami .In particular, the short novel was published with early trilogy of Haruki Murakami. Thus, this paper focused on the concept of 'death' described in the literary work.
