This is a study of historic artifacts, geographical names, chasuble and legends that originated from the Battle of Ulsan Castle in 1597. The Battle of Ulsan could be seen as a defeat by Japan, and while the allied forces of the Chosun and Ming Dynasty took the castle, but suffered large casualties. However, the Japanese troops who retreated to Japan promoted their heroism by portraying the Battle of Ulsan as a victory. Meanwhile, the artifacts, geographical names, chasuble and legends debunk the myth, and suggest that the Japanese troops indeed lost the battle.
Abstract
