Abstract
With the growing adoption of generative AI in translation, this study examines its ability to reproduce literary style and emotional depth through a comparative analysis of Human Acts by Han Kang. Using the official Japanese translation as a human reference and outputs from GPT-4o, GPT-4.1, and Gemini 2.5 Flash, the research assesses both qualitative and quantitative aspects of translation quality. Qualitative analysis focuses on errors in pronoun usage, hallucination, tone disruption, dialect handling, and stylistic fidelity. Quantitative analysis uses BERTScore (Precision, Recall, F1) to evaluate semantic similarity. Results show that while GPT-4o demonstrates relatively stable performance in emotional and poetic passages, it still falls short of human translation in cultural sensitivity and rhythm reproduction. Gemini 2.5 Flash shows compact outputs but frequent hallucinations and stylistic mismatches. These findings suggest that despite high BERTScore values, generative AI translations still require human post-editing to achieve literary completeness.
