세계시민교육을 위한 예비 지리교사의 상호문화 감수성 함양: COIL-PBL 수업의 적용과 효과

초록

본 연구는 세계시민교육의 맥락에서 온라인 국제 협력 학습(COIL, Collaborative Online International Learning)이 예비 지리교원의 상호문화 감수성 발달에 미치는 영향을 실증적으로 분석하고자 한다. 연구 대상은 한국 강릉 소재 C대학교 지리교육과 1학년 학생들(n=26)이며, 이들과 미국 시애틀 소재 W대학교의 맵핑 커뮤니티 과정 수 강생들 간의 5주간 문제중심학습(Problem-Based Learning, PBL) 프로그램을 설계⋅운영하였다. 본 연구는 혼합연구 방법론을 채택하여 사전⋅사후 설문조사를 통한 양적 분석과 포커스 그룹 인터뷰를 통한 질적 분석을 실시하였다. 양적 분석 결과, 상호문화 감수성의 하위 요인 중 ‘상호작용 자신도’ 영역에서 통계적으로 유의미한 향상이 확인되었다(p < .01). 질적 분석에서는 크게 세 가지 주요 발견이 도출되었다. 첫째, 참가자들은 타문화와의 직접적 상호작용을 통해 문 화적 차이에 대한 존중과 배려의 태도를 함양하였다. 둘째, 국제 협력 학습 과정에서 상호 호혜적 관계 형성의 중요성을 체득하였다. 셋째, 초국가적 교류 경험이 세계시민교육을 담당할 예비교원의 전문적 역량 강화에 긍정적 영향을 미쳤다. 본 연구는 COIL 기반 교수학습 설계가 예비교원의 상호문화 감수성 함양을 위한 효과적 교육방법으로 활용될 수 있음을 시사한다.

Abstract

This study examines the impact of Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) on developing intercultural sensitivity for global citizenship education among pre-service geography teachers. The study participants consisted of 26 first-year students from the Department of Geography Education at C University in Gangneung, Korea, who engaged in a five-week Problem-Based Learning (PBL) program with students enrolled in the Mapping Communities course at W University in Seattle, USA. The study employed a mixed methods approach, combining quantitative analysis through pre- and post-surveys with qualitative analysis through focus group interviews. Quantitative analysis revealed statistically significant improvement in the ‘interaction confidence’ dimension of intercultural sensitivity (p < .01). Qualitative analysis yielded three key findings. First, participants cultivated attitudes of respect and consideration for cultural differences through direct cross-cultural interactions. Second, they internalized the importance of building reciprocal relationships through international collaborative learning. Third, the transnational exchange experience positively impacted their professional development as future teachers who will be responsible for global citizenship education. This study suggests that COIL-based instructional design can serve as an effective educational approach for fostering intercultural sensitivity among pre-service teachers in the context of global citizenship education.
