Abstract
This paper analyzed the landscape of Auschwitz concentration camp, a heritage site of dark tourism, by applying the five management principles of panopticon theory. First, under the principle that panopticon facilities ‘must be strict,’ we analyzed railways, watchtowers, and barbed wire. Second, in accordance with the principle that this facility ‘must be able to guarantee economic efficiency,’ we examined the text at the entrance to the camp, labor, and evidence recycled to induce productivity. Third, in relation to the principle that this facility ‘needs physical grades and isolation arrangements by group,’ we examined how Auschwitz concentration camp was physically and class-wise classified and isolated. Fourth, as a result of analyzing the data on the principle that ‘food should be sufficient but the cheapest and most ordinary’ in the panopticon facility, we were able to confirm that even that was not implemented. Finally, in order to confirm whether this camp was a space where the principle that “punishment must take place” was applied, the gas chambers, crematoriums, public execution sites, torture chambers, and biological laboratories were analyzed to confirm that these spaces were spaces where inhumane atrocities were committed and to which the panopticon was applied.
