본고는 19세기말 프랑스인들이 한국시가에 관해 남긴 저술들을 분석함으로써 당시 한국시가가 어떠한 방식으로 그들 사이에서 논의되었는지 그 궤적을 밝히는 데 목적을 둔다. 한국에 관한 저작을 남긴 1880년대까지의 주요 프랑스 인사로는 달레 신부와 리델 주교가 있으나, 한국문학이나 시가와 관련하여서는 달레의 『한국천주교회사』 정도를 추려낼 수 있을 따름이다. 이 책의 「서설」에는 한국의 전반적인 사정이 수록되었던 바, 그 가운데 제13장에서 19세기의 가창문화와 연관된 여러 중요한 정보가 발견된다. 달레는 기녀들의 신분과 기예, 유랑 예능패의 활동과 폐단에 대해 언급하는 한편, 판소리를 일종의 극으로 규정하면서 명창이 더늠을 확대해 가는 특색에 관해서까지 자세히 설명하였는데, 이러한 기록은 한국의 가창문화를 다룬 초기 자료로서 특히 주목할 만하다. 서구인들의 한국내 활동이 한층 자유로워졌던 1890년대 이후에는 뮈텔 주교, 프랑댕 공사, 모리스 쿠랑 등이 한국 관련 저작을 남겼으며, 그중 쿠랑의 연구가 단연 두드러진다. 『한국서지』 제1권 「서설」에서 쿠랑은 한국시가의 서지를 검토한 후, 『가곡원류』 불란서본 소재 작품들을 위주로 한국시가의 주제적 분포를 분석하여 자연애, 솜씨 좋은 묘사, 감성적 기조, 연정, 애주, 인생무상, 중국적 소재와 시작법에 대한 기호 등의 특질을 도출해 내었다. 이어서 그는 당대의 한국시가를 시조, 가사, 잡가의 세 종류로 분류하기도 하였는데, 이로부터 19세기말 한국시가의 존재 양상과 세력을 가늠해 볼 수 있다. 한편, 시행의 길이와 음절수를 기준으로 시도된 그의 율격 논의는 음량을 기저로 구성되는 한국시가의 율격적 실상에 부합한다는 점에서 그 의의가 인정된다. 쿠랑은 『한국서지』 이후에도 한국의 역사나 문화에 대한 에세이를 지속적으로 발표하였으며, 그 가운데 「한국의 가극과 무극」에서는 한국의 극을 가극과 무극으로 대별한 후, 전자의 사례로 잡가의 연행을, 후자의 사례로 정재와 탈춤을 각각 제시하면서 그 특징을 요약적으로 언급하였다. 한국의 연희문화는 대단히 미미하다는 것이 19세기 서구 관찰자들의 중론이었으나, 쿠랑은 개인적인 견문과 문헌적 전거를 모두 동원하여 어떻게든 한국의 극을 발굴하려 분투하였다. 이미 1830년대부터 한국에서 활동을 시작했던 프랑스인들은 한국어 연구와 사전 편찬, 서책의 수집과 해제 등의 분야에서 선도적인 역할을 수행하였으며, 그처럼 온축된 역량을 활용하여 한국시가에 대해서도 여러 중요한 연구 성과를 제출하였다. 달레와 쿠랑의 저작을 통해 그러한 사실을 핵심적으로 간취할 수 있거니와, 이들의 기술은 면밀한 관찰과 조사 및 문헌 고증을 기반으로 이루어졌다는 점에서 큰 의미를 지닌다. 또한, 일부 영미권 논자들이 때로 긴요치 않은 수식을 섞어 가며 개인적 인상을 앞세워 한국의 문화적 현상을 다루고는 하였던 데 비해, 달레와 쿠랑은 한층 객관적 시각을 유지하려 노력하였다는 점에서도 초기 한국학 연구에 끼친 그들의 기여도를 평가할 수 있다.
Abstract
This article aims to examine Frenchmen’s perceptions of Korean poetry in the late nineteenth century by analyzing their writings and comments on the subject. Father Claude Charles Dallet and Bishop Félix Clair Ridel have been regarded as the notable French authors who wrote outstanding books on Korea by the 1880s, but Dallet’s Histoire de l’église de Corée, or the History of the Church of Korea is probably the only writing which deserves attention in respect of Korean poetry. General affairs of Korea in the nineteenth century are reviewed in the introduction of this book, the thirteenth chapter of which contains several information on Korean songs and professional singers. Dallet described gisaeng’s social position and dance, vagabond troupes’ accomplishments and evil influences on society, and the extemporaneous skills of the performers of pansori that he looked upon as a kind of drama. Such reference is especially valuable to the studies of Korean folklore in the premodern age. Since 1890s when westerners were no longer oppressed in Korea, more Frenchmen such as Bishop Gustave-Charles-Marie Mütel, Maurice Courant, and Minister Hippolyte Frandin had wrote on Korea. Courant’s Bibliographie coréenne, or Korean Bibliography is the most remarkable regarding Korean poetry and songs. After giving a conspectus of collections of Korean poetry, Courant analyzed the verses of the ‘French Edition(Bulranseobon)’ of Gagokwonryu, and designated ‘a strong sense of nature’, ‘a real talent for description’, ‘a sentimental tone’, ‘love and joy’, ‘the pleasure of drunkenness’, ‘the passage of time’, ‘the brevity of life’, and ‘the admiration for Chinese poetry’ as the main features of Korean poetry. Meanwhile, he divided Korean poetry into three categories: sijo, gasa, and japga, from which we can infer each genre’s influence in the late nineteenth century. His comments on the versification structure of Korean poetry is also noteworthy, for he spotted the quantity of the syllables as the primary factor that makes the rhythm of Korean poetry. Besides Korean Bibliography, Courant continuously wrote several essays on Korean history and culture. In “La Complainte mimée et le ballet en Corée,” or “The Lyric Drama and the Ballet in Korea,” published in 1897, Courant highlighted the performance of japga as a Korean lyric drama and both jeongjae and talchum as Korean ballets. While most westerners in the nineteenth century thought Korea has no distinct genre of drama, Courant tried to find out and conceptualize Korean dramas. French missionaries started to evangelize in Korea in 1830s, and they surpassed westerners from other countries in not only the studies on Korean language and the compilation of dictionaries but also in the bibliographical explanations of Korean literature. Utilizing such a heritage, and adding elaborate and objective observations, Dallet and Courant could present significant views on Korean poetry. In this manner, their writings still acquires a certain level of importance.
