고등교육맥락에서 본 학습자의 전환학습 경험에 대한 자기 성찰적 보고

초록

본 연구는 전환학습을 촉진하도록 의도적으로 설계된 수업환경에서 학습자들이 어떻게 전환적 경험을 하는가를 질적 연구방법을 통해 살펴보았다. 기존 연구들이 내적 갈등을 유발하는 생애사건 경험의 중요성과 관점전환이 우연적으로 발생하게 되는 과정에 초점을 맞추어 왔던 반면, 본 연구는 전환학습을 촉진하기 위해 의도적으로 설계된 교육과정 내에서 일어나는 학습자들의 전환적 경험을 살펴보았다. 분석 결과, 첫째, 전환학습은 충격적인 생애사건이 없이도 일상적인 경험을 소재로 성찰을 통해 일어나는 학습이다. 둘째, 전환학습은 일회적인 경험이 아닌 성찰을 통해 삶의 의미구성 방식을 변화시켜나가는 지속적인 자아의 발달과정을 동반한다. 셋째, 전환학습은 교수자에 의해 설계된 안전하고 지지적인 학습 환경과 신뢰에 기반 한 학습공동체 및 성찰을 돕는 다양한 교수법을 통해 더욱 효과적으로 촉진될 수 있다. 이러한 연구결과를 토대로 전환학습이 발달론적 관점을 포함하는 개념으로 확장되어야 함을 논의하였다.

Abstract

Transformative learning theory has received increasing attention in the field of adult education and now it is regarded as a leading adult learning theory in the field. However, previous research on transformative learning theory tended to put too much emphasis on the importance of disorienting dilemma and to focus on transformation as a result of incidental events. Based on these critiques, this study investigated adult learners’ learning experiences in classrooms that were designed to facilitate transformative learning, by employing a qualitative research method, resulting in the following findings. First, transformative learning would occur based on reflection on one’s daily experiences without significant life events. Second, transformation is not an outcome from onetime experience but a continuous and accumulative self-development process. Finally, transformative learning could be better facilitated by providing holding environment and building authentic relationships among adult educators and learners.
