Abstract
This paper tests the hypothesis that a firm’s leverage is negatively related to R&D intensity of its suppliers and customers on industry level. Fixed effect panel model is used in the empirical analysis of this paper. Major findings of this paper are as follows: First, a firm’s leverage was found to be negatively related to R&D intensity of its suppliers and customers on industry level. This result implies that a firm can decrease its leverage as a strategy to motivate firm specific investments of its suppliers and customers. Second, the result from the test of the hypothesis using generalized methods of moment (GMM) dynamic panel estimator turns out not to be different from that of fixed effect panel model, which implies that the negative relation between firm leverage and R&D intensity of its suppliers and customers is robust to GMM specification correcting the endogenity.
