최근 환경오염에 대한 우려와 함께 기업의 환경경영에 대한 관심과 투자가 증가하고 있다. 그러나이러한 추세에도 국내기업을 대상으로 환경경영과 수익변동성의 관계를 살펴본 연구는 아직 제한적이다. 이에 본 논문은 국내 상장기업을 대상으로 기업의 환경경영이 수익변동성에 어떠한 영향을미치는지에 대해 분석하고 이러한 영향이 제조업과 서비스업에서 차별화되어 나타나는지에 대해검증하였다. 분석결과, 국내기업의 경우 환경경영활동 수준이 높아질수록 수익변동성이 증가함을발견하였다. 이는 미국과 일부 유럽 선진국을 대상으로 환경경영의 긍정적 효과를 주장한 선행연구와달리 국내기업의 경우 환경경영이 수익변동성을 높이는 부정적 효과가 존재함을 보여준다. 또한 본연구는 환경경영과 제조업 더미변수의 교차항의 부호가 부(-)의 값을 가지고 있으나 환경경영과서비스업 더미변수의 교차항의 부호는 정(+)의 값을 가지고 있음을 발견하였다. 이는 환경경영의부정적 효과가 제조업에 비해 서비스업에서 더욱 강하게 나타나고 있음을 보여주며 환경경영활동의효과가 산업별로 상이하게 나타날 수 있음을 시사한다. 이러한 분석결과는 기업의 환경 관련 정책입안에 있어 산업별 특성에 맞는 차별화된 정책이 수립되어야 함을 의미함과 동시에 기업의 환경경영을 유도하기 위하여 정부차원의 적극적인 지원이 필요할 수 있음을 시사한다.
Abstract
Although the concern and investing for environment are increasing, the study of relation between Korean firms’ environmental management and their volatility of profitability is limited. Therefore, this paper investigates the associations between Korean firms’ environmental management and the volatility. Furthermore we also show that the different effects of environmental management on the volatility of profitability between the manufacturing and service industries. The results show that better environmental practices exhibit higher volatility of profitability. Our empirical findings also provide evidence that the negative effects of environmental activity are stronger in service sector than manufacturing sector. Hence, we suggest that policy makers should provide more political support to Korean firms for making firms’ aggressive environmental investing and activities.
