Abstract
The purpose of this study was to explore the impact of a proprioceptive exercise program on fall-related physical functions and bone mineral density (BMD) in elderly women diagnosed with osteopenia. Thirty elderly women with osteopenia were randomly divided into two groups: an intervention group (n = 15) and a control group (n = 15). The intervention group engaged in a proprioceptive exercise regimen three times per week over a 12-week period. Assessments of muscular endurance, balance, and coordination—factors closely associated with fall risk—were conducted before and after the intervention. Bone mineral density was also measured at baseline and following the 12-week program. Firstly, participants in the exercise group exhibited statistically significant improvements in muscular endurance, postural balance, and coordination when compared to the control group (p < .001), indicating enhanced physical function relevant to fall prevention. Secondly, there was a significant increase in bone mineral density in the intervention group after completing the program, with marked improvements over the control group (p < .001). A 12-week proprioceptive training program contributed to meaningful gains in both bone density and physical abilities associated with fall prevention among elderly women with osteopenia. These findings support the use of proprioceptive exercises as a preventive strategy for reducing fall risk and promoting musculoskeletal health in this population.
