Abstract

Samatha-Vipassana Meditation and Transpersonal psychotherapy In-kyungWhile the western psychology has studied to focus on the appearance and formation of pathological phenomena, the oriental approach has emphasized the way of the meditation and emancipation. Recently a new tendency in psychotherapy is try to integrate the western and the oriental approach. In psychoanalysis the most important work is to find the repressed unconsciousness. If we find this the repressed and return to his(or her) real consciousness, then we can consider to treat for his nervosity. This repressed impulse of our mind is also the very important problem in meditation. Our fantastic ideas that appear in meditation are rooted in this psychological hindrance. Conventionally meditation is explained Samatha and Vipassan. In the integral approach of psychotherapy, we need to have a new interpretation for the traditional concepts of Buddhism. The purpose of samatha is to induce concentration in the mind and free it from all distraction. We can interpret concentration in this samatha meditation as the open and receptible mind in the counseling. The essence of Vipassan is to see the fact as it is. We can also interpret 'to see' as 'to transcend' our egoistic attachment in the psychotherapy.
