Abstract
Though Venerable Thich Nhat Hanh is more widely known today, the understanding of what he proposes is still an enigma to many. This is what makes it so important for Thich Nhat Hanh's message to be explained, because his teachings based on Buddhism can provide an important perspective to the philosophy of peace and mutual understanding. The bases of Thich Nhat Hanh's views on peace and mutual understanding are by no means new. The concepts of inter-being,mindfulness, compassion, and afflictive emotions, are some of the core tenets of Buddhism. What is unique to Thich Nhat Hanh's process is the way in which he uses these tenets to engage the modern world. In other words, Thich Nhat Hanh's teachings are derived from traditional Buddhist sources, but they are frequently renewed in contemporary language to address the modern situation in the West. Central to the teachings and practices for practical peace making suggested by Thich Nhat Hanh is insight into interbeing and the understanding of co-responsibility that arises from this insight. When we are totally mindful, we realize that all phenomena are interdependent and endlessly interwoven. This is the foundation of Nhat Hanh’s approach, not only to peace but to all of life. He calls it the principle of "interbeing." Through the practice of mindfulness,we realize the suffering we experience and apply that realization to all beings that in the end experience the same suffering. According to Thich Nhat Hanh, peace begins with our own minds. To make peace, he argues, it is necessary to "be peace." Our enemies, he said, are hatred, inhumanity, anger, and ideology but not man. Though Thich Nhat Hanh enjoyed a great deal of support for his actions, their were critics of Hanh both in the Buddhist and anti-war communities. One of the most common criticisms he receives is the unwillingness to take part in the politics of the war. According to the critics, Thich Nhat Hanh did not take a big enough part in pushing for a particular post war government. However, his philosophy of peace can be rated high from the viewpoint that it suggested the role of religion as a peaceful mediator during wartime. He wanted neither to ally with nor to distance from any party of the war.
