Abstract

It may not be possible to find a solution to political problems from Buddhism, however, Buddhist wisdom can be applied when we are confronted with political problems. Buddhism, considerng private property and poverty as the reason for the birth of the government, values highly of the time when people are free to solve their problems in the market before the government is created. There has been a continuation of disputes on which government is more desirable between small government and big government, while, historically, small government and big government appeared alternately. Buddhist sutra make it clear that the government should pursue very active welfare policy which in turn resulting in big government. The relational state model and governance model, suggested as new alternatives in social science, insist that government, market and civil society together should create public value with interactions and collaborations of all their competencies and knowledges shunning the old way of solving public problems. Buddhist interdependent co-arising view does not artificially distinguish government from market and civil society since elements of market and civil society are found in government. It believes that every member should cooperate to solve the problems of buddhist community encompassing animals, plants and even natural environments. Community member's interactions and humanistic relationships are considered important as in the relational state and governance models. Wheel-turning sage king as an ideal monarch is considered exercising ethical leadership meaning that he influences people as a role model whereas people influence him in a social learning process. The state governed by wheel-turning sage king is a physically present pure land resulting from social reform. Messages regarding political arenas mentioned in Buddhist sutra will offer us very valuable insights on realizing 21st century pure land since Buddhism pursues social reform through personal change.
