병고 고익진의 삶과 학문세계

한국의 불교학자들 대부분은 근현대 한국불교학의 대표학자로 고익진(1934~1988)을 손꼽는다. 그가 초기불교 연구에 초석을 다지고 한국불교학 연구에 큰 업적을 남겼을 뿐만 아니라 일승보살회를 조직하여 불교의 이론과 실천을 병행한 학자였다는 인식에서이다. 길지 않은 삶을 살다간 고익진은 평생을 동반한 병고와 광범하고 정치한 불교학 연구 두 가지 코드로 읽혀진다. 그에게 있어서 병고는 차라리 경외로운 도반이었다. 그로 인해 불교와 만나고 불교학을 이루어갈 수 있었던 원동력이 되었기 때문이다. 그는 지독한 병고 속에서 인생의 무상과 함께 참 삶의 의미를 깨닫고 그것은 진리탐구의 길로 이어진다. 그러나 이는 신앙에의 맹목적인 추종이나 매몰이 아닌, 비판적 각성을 전제로 한 구도의 길이었다. 그만큼 그가 연구 개척해온 불교학은 실존적 성향을 띤다. 만학으로 시작한 고익진의 학문세계는 동국대 강사 시절을 포함하여 불교학과 교수재임까지 14년 정도의 기간 중에 이루어낸 불교학연구의 업적들에서 드러난다. 그것은 ① 거의 전무하던 초기불교분야의 연구 개척과 정초 ② 대소승을 포괄하는 불교의 일원적 사상체계 정립 ③ 한국불교의 사상적 비젼 제시 ④ 『한국 불교전서』 편집 간행 등으로 요악할 수 있다. 이들 업적은 그가 남긴 대략 40여편의 저술과 논문 속에 담겨 있다. 이와 더불어 고익진의 학문세계는 일승보살회의 조직과 활동을 통해서도 엿볼 수 있다. 그것은 생활인의 불교를 표방하며, 생활 속에서 깨달음과 그 실천을 추구하는 이 시대의 새로운 결사운동이라고 말할 수 있다. 그는 학문에만 갇혀 있는 불교가 아닌, 일상생활 속에서 약동하는 불교를 이루고자 하였다.
Abstract
Most Korean scholars in Buddhist studies recognize Koh Ik-jin (1934-1988) as a topnotch scholar in modern Korea. This consensus among academia is due to his great achievements in the study of early Buddhism and Korean Buddhism. They also underscore his character who endeavored to realize the Buddhist ideals in both areas of theory and practice by organizing the Ilseung Bosalhoe (Bodhisattva’s Society for the One Vehicle). Although he was short-lived, his life troubled by life-long pain from illness and his scholarship characterized by immense breadth and depth are indeed impressive. Because he was able to encounter Buddhism and accomplish his scholarship due to the suffering from illness, he regarded it as a wonderful companion in his life. His severe illness awakened him to the impermanence and true meaning of life and propelled his search for the truth. The Buddhist way he pursued was, however, not a blind or obsessed faith but a path to enlightenment predicated on the critical attitude. Thus, his Buddhist scholarship denotes his existential orientation. The scholarship of Koh Ik-jin, who began his study in Buddhism very late in his life, can be appreciated by going over his achievements made during about fourteen years of his academic career. These achievements, which were published in about 40 papers, are concerned with (1) pioneering the study of early Buddhism and laying a firm foundation for its further research, (2) establishing comprehensive and systematic Buddhist thought which includes both Hinayana and Mahayana Buddhism, (3) presenting an ideological vision for Korean Buddhism, and (4) editing and publishing the Han’guk Bulgyo jeonseo (The Complete Works of Korean Buddhism) series. His scholarly vision can also be discerned from the organization and activities of the Ilseung Bosalheo. As this society aims at spreading Buddhism for people engaged in society, it should be labelled as a new Buddhist movement in which people pursue Buddhist enlightenment and practice in their daily life. In other words, he endeavored to realize the Buddhism that transcends the boundaries of academia and actively participate in the secular realm.
