Abstract

Buddhist economics is a well-known concept in Schumacher's work, Small is beautiful. In this book, he defined Buddhist economics as the economies based on Buddhist teachings and presented simplicity and nonviolence as its contents. According to him, the purpose of economics must be drawn from the study of humans, and the major part of the methodology must be derived from the study of nature. In his argument, he emphasizes the importance of meta-economics, which consists of dealing with humans and the natural environment. Since Schumacher, Buddhist economics is still being discussed to this day through Payutto, Sivaraksa, Brown and so on. Buddhist economics argument has been focused on the notion of interdependence (緣起), which is Buddhist teaching based on the correlations of human beings and nature, self and others. It is, however, thought that another core teaching, namely the middle way (中道), is placed to recognize these interdependent relations. Especially, if we explain Buddhism concerning the economic life of the laymen, Buddhism does not deny their pursuit of desires to achieve their interests. But it is obviously forbidden to pursue the desires arising from excessive selfishness, or so-called greed. Instead, it encourages a way of life that is shared with others. Here, there is a need to approach Buddhist teachings through the concept of the middle way, the harmony of self-interest and other. Today, since the sharing economy is emerging as a new economic model, what is the significance of Buddhist economics to us? As technological conditions using the digital platform are equipped, it is expected that the sharing economy would be possible to solve income inequalities and environmental problems. This is a remarkable similarity to Schumacher's Buddhist economics, which seeks to find the well-being and happiness of more people by overcoming the ideology of growth. If we approach the sharing economy as a new opportunity for profit, however, the fear of being dominated by the logic of capital is also rising. Moreover, in the case of the commercial-type sharing economy, the possibility of the intersection with Buddhist economics is not high. In this respect, it is worth to notice Benkler's argument, based on Ostrom's claim that it can stop the tragedy of the common land based on the autonomous system in the local community as 'a third alternative, neither market nor government'. Benkler suggests the possibility of a sharing economy defined in the style of voluntary social cooperation and solidarity among peers. This shows that it is possible to harmonize the self-interest and other's interest through the concept of the middle way.
