Abstract

This study examines the use of the cinematic technique of extreme close-up within webtoons—a digital comics medium— and its role in conveying emotion and enhancing reader immersion. While close-ups have traditionally functioned as a key mode of emotional expression in visual media, the extreme close-up, which isolates and magnifies specific features such as facial expressions or body parts, proves particularly effective in rendering the internal psychological states of characters. Despite their frequent use in webtoons extreme close-ups have received relatively little scholarly attention. This research therefore seeks to elucidate its narrative function and emotional efficacy within the formal and aesthetic parameters unique to webtoons. Grounded in Gilles Deleuze’s theory of the affection-image, the study positions the extreme close-up not simply as a tool of visual emphasis but as a non-verbal mode of emotional communication. By highlighting mechanisms of selective framing and focused visual attention, the study explores how extreme close-ups generate affect through omission and intensity. In doing so, they create a unique immersive experience in which readers engage with what may be described as a “subjective emotional rhythm”—a dynamic emotional flow that invites active participation rather than passive reception. This rhythm fosters emotional resonance without relying on overt expressiveness, thereby deepening internal engagement. In conclusion, the study argues that extreme close-ups, when employed within the digital and episodic structure of webtoons, function as a vital narrative device for intuitive and concrete emotional expression. The findings suggest that the extreme close-up, far from being a borrowed cinematic convention, has been reimagined as a distinct affective strategy within the webtoon format—offering critical insights for future scholarship in digital comics.
