(Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There)를 탄생시킨다.
Abstract
This study analyses Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There as representative of 19th-century British children’s literature. Lewis Carroll is the pen name of Charles Dodgson, the author of both works. As an educated white man in English society at the time, Dodgson was expected to be part of the mainstream, but he refused. He spent most of his time with children rather than in intellectual company, making up stories to tell them, which led to the publication of the Alice stories. The Alice series reflects the 19th century British society, and through these works Carroll criticises the dominant social order and values of the British Empire. This paper examines Carroll’s critique of the society of his time and his new vision of the creative individual and society through the ‘Underground World’ and the ‘Mirror World,’ where the dominant British order is thoroughly blocked and subverted.
