Abstract
This study examined the sequential mediating effects of self-compassion and mental health on the relationship between adult attachment and marital satisfaction in middle-aged women, distinguishing between attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance. A total of 400 middle-aged women aged 40-65 participated in an online survey measuring adult attachment, marital satisfaction, self-compassion, and mental health. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 25.0 and Hayes’ (2013) PROCESS Macro 2.16. The results indicated that both attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance were negatively associated with self-compassion and marital satisfaction, and positively associated with poor mental health. The individuals mediating effects of self-compassion and mental health on the relationship between adult attachment and marital satisfaction were not statistically significant. However, self-compassion and mental health were found to sequentially mediate the relationship between both attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance and marital satisfaction. These findings highlight the potential mechanisms linking adult attachment to marital satisfaction in middle-aged women and suggest implications for therapeutic interventions and future research.
