Abstract
-Background:This study aimed to identify factors associated with prioritizing environmental issues among adult residents living in 25 administrative districts of Wonju-si, South Korea. Objectives:By identifying the characteristics of residents who are more likely to prioritize environmental issues among community problems, this study sought to provide baseline evidence for the development of environmental health policies tailored to Wonju-si. -Methods:This study analyzed data from 2,496 residents of Wonju-si collected through the G-Lab Project of the Regional Crisis Response Collaborative Research Center at Yonsei University. The dependent variable was defined as selecting environmental issues as important community problems. Independent variables included sociodemographic characteristics, health-related characteristics, and community characteristics. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was conducted. -Results:Among the study participants, 23.88% of respondents prioritized environmental issues, including global warming and fine particulate matter, among community problems. Residents with higher levels of community consciousness, intention to continue living in the community, residence in multi-family housing, residence in rural-industrial areas, middle income levels, and better sleep quality were more likely to prioritize environmental issues as a major community problem. In contrast, compared with residents living in old downtown areas, those residing in new urban areas (innovation cities), individuals with a university education or higher, those engaging in physical activity, and those with chronic diseases were less likely to prioritize environmental issues as a major community problem. -Conclusion:Prioritizing environmental issues as major community problems may be shaped not only by individual health status and socioeconomic characteristics but also by broader community social and environmental contexts, including community consciousness, lifestyle factors, and regional characteristics. Given that residents' prioritization of environmental issues may influence support for and engagement in environmental health initiatives, future environmental health policies should strengthen community participation and develop tailored strategies that reflect the characteristics of different areas within Wonju-si.
