Abstract
‘YHWH-religion’ of Israel developed through several processes and various historical events. In the early Israeli faith, YHWH coexisted with several gods. However, it is far from the general “Polytheism” practiced by the nations around Israel, where several gods are worshiped simultaneously. After the birth of the kingdom of Israel, YHWH was served as Israel’s ‘national god’ and the supreme God. However, in folk beliefs, it cannot be denied that the Canaanite religion still existed alongside the YHWH-religion. There is evidence are several approaches to religious belief: 1. “Henotheism” or “Monolatry” which means to choose and serve one of several gods, 2. “Syncretism” to identify YHWH with El, or YHWH with Baal, and 3. “Dyotheism” to choose one goddess like Anat, Ashera and Ischtar as YHWH’s spouse are also confirmed. However, these beliefs were not in the mainstream of Israel’s YHWH religion. Israel’s YHWH faith in the early kingdom was faced with a great crisis when Ahab injected the Baal religion in the 9th century BC. Against the Baal religion, Elijah initiates the “YHWH-alone movement” that demands people make a choice between YHWH and Baal. This faith movement continued through Amos-Hosea, but failed with the destruction of the northern kingdom of Israel by Assyria. But in Judah, the southern kingdom, it was maintained through the religious Reformation of Hezekiah and Josiah. The core of the two religious reforms, contrary to the previous religious movements, was that it promoted a more exclusive religious policy for other religions. And through the work of the central sanctuary in Jerusalem, YHWH certainly gained the status of a state god. However, the exclusive ‘Yahweh-alone movement’ from the 9th century BC to the time of Josiah eventually failed with the fall of the kingdom of Judah to Babylonia. In this political crisis, Israel confesses a new faith in YHWH, namely “YHWH Monotheism”. Only YHWH is the true god, no other gods exist, and only YHWH is the creator of the whole world, and the only ruler of the whole world’s history
