Abstract

This article aims to read and interpret the Gospel of John with a fresh angle through the novel, The Brothers Karamazov, written by Russian author Fyodor Dostoevsky. He wrote this novel with his own theological considerations based on a thoughtful reading of John‘s Gospel. In particular, John 12:24, the epigraph of the book, functions as the key to understanding the entire novel. The testament of the Father Zoshima toward Alyosha (John 12:24) indicates the death as well as resurrection of himself through the scene of the Wedding at Cana. In this manner, the author connects the two separated passages — 2:1-11 and 12:24 — and then portrays the stories with the theme of death and resurrection. Dostoevsky employs paradox for a more attractive reading and aesthetically illustrates death. Actually, the death of the characters in the novel bears much fruit. These themes in the novel allow the readers to read the Gospel of John from a fresh angle. From the view of Dostoevsky, the transformation in 2:1 11 reaches the climax in chapter 11, the episode of Lazarus, and is completed by Jesus‘ statement about death and glory in 12:23-24. Along the way, paradox plays a significant role in the entire narrative, especially for illustrating victory and glory by death which is a symbol of sublime beauty. Thus, this essay claims that the passage of 12:24 contains the aesthetics of the Fourth Gospel. Like this, the reading of the novelist Dostoevsky would provide a fresh angle to read and interpret the gospel.
