Abstract

This paper argues that the creation as conceived by the authors of Genesis 1-2 and Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph von Schelling’s understanding of creation share remarkable similarities. Both Genesis 1-2 and Schelling’s perspective recognize that human creation is not merely a part of the world’s creation, but rather two interconnected aspects of the same divine creative act of God (the Absolute). According to Genesis 1-2, God brought into existence the world by placing boundaries around the chaos that preceded the six-days of creation, and thus the possibility of the reemergence of chaos remains. To prevent the resurgence of chaos, God created human beings and let them rule the world with justice. Schelling argues that God. had no choice but to incorporate a “dark principle” or evil into the world to create humans as free beings. Since the “dark principle” contains God’s universal will, evil is not inherently malevolent but rather a prerequisite for light and goodness. Although human freedom can cause harm to the created world, humans are the only creatures who can manifest God’s free nature to the world due to the religiosity or conscience bestowed upon them. Humans can benefit the creation because human religiosity entails moral and ethical responsibility towards the created world. Thus, a profound interconnectedness exists between the world and humans. The world’s sustenance depends on human beings, and they, in turn, rely on the world for survival. In essence, the world serves as the stage for humanity to fulfill its purpose in creation, and humans beings are the only agents capable of revealing God’s commands (Word, Commandments, Logos) to the world.
