『탐라순력도(耽羅巡歷圖)』 속의 해녀 연구

『탐라순력도』(1703)는 이형상(李衡祥, 1653∼1733) 목사의 순력(巡歴) 내용을 담은 그림책이다. 이형상은 1702년(숙종 28) 11월에 탐라(제주도)를 순력하였다. 이형상이 순력하는 동안에 화공(畵工) 김남길(金南吉)은 모두 41점의 그림을 그렸다. 『탐라순력도』 그림의 틀은 3단 구성이다. 상단에는 그림의 이름을 적고, 중단에는 그림을 그리고, 하단에 는 그림의 내용을 기록하였다. 그런데 『탐라순력도』 그림 41점 중 하단에 아무런 기록이 없는 것이 있다. 그 것이 <병담범주(屛潭泛舟)>다. ‘병담(屛潭)’은 ‘취병담(翠屛潭)’을 말하는데 ‘용연(龍淵)’이라고도 한다. 즉, ‘용연’에서 뱃놀이를 하는 그림이 다. 왜 뱃놀이 그림의 하단에는 아무 기록이 없을까? 그런데 이 그림에 해녀가 등장한다. 제주도 해녀가 있 는 최초의 그림이다. 『탐라순력도』 속의 해녀는 무슨 옷을 입고, 무엇을 따고 있을까. 그리고 해녀가 사용한 도구는 어떤 것이 었을까? 이 글에서는 『탐라순력도』에 그려진 해녀복에서 현재의 고무 해녀복까지를 통시적으로 살펴보고, 해녀의 도구에 대해서는 ‘테왁’과 ‘망사리’를 구체적으로 살펴보았다. 『탐라순력도』 속 해녀는 전복을 따는 ‘빗잠녀’들이고, ‘빗잠녀’ 손에 들려 있는 것은 전복을 따는 도구인 ‘빗창’이다. 그리고 ‘잠녀’들이 입고 있는 해녀복은 ‘아랫도리 해녀복’이다.
Abstract
Tamnasullyeokdo(耽羅巡歷圖)’ is a picture book that shows tours of Lee Hyung-sang(1653-1733). In November, 1702(the 28th year of King Sukjong’s reign), Lee Hyung-sang toured Tamna. During his tour, Kim Nam-gil painted a total of 41 paintings. ‘Tamnasullyeokdo’ picture consists of three steps. There are the title of the picture at the top, and the picture at the end, and the contents of a picture at the bottom. However, there is one painting that has no record at the bottom of the 41 paintings. That’s ‘ByeongdamBumju(屛潭泛舟)’. ‘Byeongdam’ refers to ‘Chibyeongdam(翠屛潭)’, also known as ‘Yongyeon(龍淵)’. It’s a picture of boating here. Why is there no record on the bottom of the boating picture? However, there are five haenyeo in this picture. It is the first painting of a haenyeo in Jeju Island. What do the haenyeo in ‘Tamnasullyeokdo’ wear and what they are collecting? And what was the tool used by the haenyeo? In the study, I examined the haenyeo suits depicted in ‘Tamnasullyeokdo’ and the current rubber haenyeo suits. As for the haenyeo’s tools, I specifically noted ‘Teawak’ and ‘Mangsari’ . The haenyeo in ‘Tamnasullyeokdo’ are the ‘PitJamnyeo’ who pick abalone. What’s in the hands of ‘PitJamnyo’ is ‘Pitchang,’ a tool for picking abalone. And the haenyeo suit worn by ‘Jamnyo’ was ‘ Alettori Haenyeo’s suit’.
